The Galleria at Plaza 66 was conceived as an intimate extension of one of Shanghai’s most iconic shopping destinations, Plaza 66. It is a space that balances subtle dualities while seamlessly integrating into a bustling, fully operational mall. The design team’s primary challenge was transforming a highly constrained space—bound by safety compartmentalization, existing structural elements, and immovable egress routes—into a refined destination that not only aligned with the Plaza 66 brand but also stood apart as a distinct, elevated experience.
Unlike the rest of the mall, the Galleria introduces a curated collection of smaller boutiques specializing in exquisite offerings such as jewelry and perfume. Inspired by these luxury goods, its design takes cues from finely crafted handbags and jewelry, placing a strong emphasis on materiality. Every element, from ceiling to floor, was meticulously integrated to create a cohesive and immersive environment.
The signature quilted ceiling serves as the defining visual element of the Galleria, embodying precision and artistry. Soft, recessed ambient lighting accentuates its form, creating a sense of depth and understated elegance. Together, the ceiling and floor establish a seamless spatial rhythm, subtly guiding visitors from the main arcades into a more intimate and exclusive environment.
A key design intervention occurs at the central gathering space, where the corridor gently widens to create a more inviting and functional experience. In contrast to the rest of the mall, where seating is minimal, this area introduces a programmatic element with a café positioned beneath the signature mirrored ceiling feature. This central node not only anchors the Galleria but transforms it from a passageway into a destination, offering visitors a place to pause and unwind during their shopping experience.
Architecturally, the exposed columns in this widened space were embraced as defining elements rather than concealed. Their placement and detailing contribute to the visual rhythm of the space that enhances rather than competes with the overall composition.
In keeping with the Plaza 66 brand, known for its luxurious yet understated aesthetic, the material palette achieves luxury through simplicity and refinement, consisting largely of stone, metal, wood, and GFR. The richness of the design lies not in opulence but in the careful attention to proportion, texture, and the interplay of materials. This approach ensures a space that feels both fresh and distinctive while remaining deeply connected to the architectural language of Plaza 66.
Through these deliberate interventions, the Galleria introduces an intimate, subtly sophisticated environment that remains connected to the broader mall. The balance between operational constraints and innovation defines the project’s success, offering a cohesive design experience for shoppers.
